Advent Day 19…. The Silence of the Girl’s

The ancient city of Troy has withstood a decade under siege of the powerful Greek army, which continues to wage bloody war over a stolen woman—Helen. In the Greek camp, another woman—Briseis—watches and waits for the war’s outcome. She was queen of one of Troy’s neighboring kingdoms, until Achilles, Greece’s greatest warrior, sacked her city and murdered her husband and brothers. Briseis becomes Achilles’s concubine, a prize of battle, and must adjust quickly in order to survive a radically different life, as one of the many conquered women who serve the Greek army.

When Agamemnon, the brutal political leader of the Greek forces, demands Briseis for himself, she finds herself caught between the two most powerful of the Greeks. Achilles refuses to fight in protest, and the Greeks begin to lose ground to their Trojan opponents. Keenly observant and coolly unflinching about the daily horrors of war, Briseis finds herself in an unprecedented position, able to observe the two men driving the Greek army in what will become their final confrontation, deciding the fate not only of Briseis’s people but also of the ancient world at large.

You may have noticed another subtle rainbow…

The cover of this book screams 90s to me and it was so fun to create this washed out pastel rainbow with contrasting black speckles and splashes.

The book is another female author but one that I have read recently instead of a while ago! It was such a good premise, following a commonly known story but through the eyes and issues faced by the women, who in history were never given a voice. Not to pop my feminist pants on but, I loved it!! Worth a read!!

We are so near the end now… I don’t want it to end!!!

Advent Day 18…. The Handmaid’s Tale

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…

Well we know that the advent was going to include a rainbow didn’t we?! I cannot help myself! this gorgeous dye pan shows it off beautifully as some times the twist can hide the full spectrum!

The deep and bright primary colours with their counterpart of secondary match the cover beautifully and the fabric it makes is divine! (spoiler at the bottom)

This book was amazing to read the first time around and I really need to get a move on reading the second!! One of my customers mentioned that the advent has been very female author heavy… and it wasn’t planned, but to be honest, I am here for it! Girl power all the way, and this one is another to the tally!!

Look at the advent so far! Isn’t it gorgeous!!!

So what book do you think we will be placing on our shelf tomorrow?!

Advent Day 17…. House of Earth and Blood

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night-until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose-to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion-one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

How could I do a collection of yarn about books without including a bit of the Maas universe.

If you’ve not jumped on the Maas wagon… I implore you do so, but actually start with the other series and work up to this absolute masterpiece of literature. I am obsessed.

The colours are similar to yesterday, but the distribution of them is different, giving the fabric made from the yarn a totally different feel. It’s like the warmest sunset!

Advent Day 16…. The Alchemist

The Alchemist is a story of transformation. But rather than transforming leading to gold, it is a story of a shepherd boy who has the courage to follow his dreams and has a spiritual awakening.

The boy gives up everything to embark on a long journey across the desert toward the Egyptian pyramids, to look for a treasure he has dreamed of. He follows omens and the wisdom of spiritual guides he meets along the way. He encounters obstacles and trials, and he learns lessons from them about taking risks, conquering fears, and listening to his heart.

This dye pan is my pan of dreams. These colours are my absolute favourites! Very me!

This amazing story will help you gain perspective and an appreciation of the important things in life!

Look at those colours. The rich and warm spectrum of today’s colourway is just a joy.

Advent Day 15…. Kindred

Dana, a modern Black woman, is celebrating her 26th birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning, and Dana has been summoned to save him. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the slave quarters, and each time the stay grows longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana’s life will end, long before it has a chance to begin.

Kindred is another book group book that was recommended by a bookshop worker, and I am so grateful I can pass on this recommendation.

It was harrowing and eye-opening and just brilliantly written. An absolute must read for an insight into American history like never before.

Bright splashed of reds, oranges and soft yellows with hints of black and areas of white. I love this multilayered interpretation of the book cover today.

Look at our shelf, it bursting with amazing books! What will join them tomorrow?!  So excited!
